About Carbon Farm Planning

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

Carbon farming combines cutting-edge agricultural practices with the tools of ecological design to build healthy soil and profitable farms and ranches, as well as improving the rate at which carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere and converted to plant material and/or soil organic matter. A Carbon Farm Plan evaluates and quantifies how on-farm practices can sequester carbon while providing other environmental co-benefits such as increased on-farm climate resilience, soil health, and farm productivity. Carbon Farm Plans can be developed for natural and working lands including: rangelands, forests, croplands and orchards.

This one-day workshop will cover the basic principles of the carbon cycle, steps to creating a Carbon Farm Plan, use of NRCS COMET-Planner and COMET-Farm tools, and will include applications and practice with in-field preliminary assessments on the ranch.

The demand for Carbon Farm Planners is increasing in California. Use this opportunity to network with natural resources professionals for future projects.

About the Workshop Instructors:

Jeff Creque
Marin Carbon Project
Carbon Cycle Institute

Jeff Creque is co-founder of the Marin Carbon Project and a Director at the Carbon Cycle Institute, where he provides senior leadership on carbon farming and land management. He brings thirty years of applied experience and theoretical training to the task of informing and facilitating the goals of these organizations. He is an agricultural and rangeland consultant and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) certified nutrient management planning specialist. His organizational affiliations include: Founding Board Member, Alliance for Local Sustainable Agriculture (Marin); Co-Founder, Bolinas-Stinson Beach Compost Project; Agricultural Director, Apple Tree International; and Co-Founder, West Marin Compost Coalition. Dr. Creque holds a PhD in Rangeland Ecology from Utah State University, and is a California State Board of Forestry Certified Professional in Rangeland Management.

Lynette Niebrugge
Marin Resources Conservation District

Lynette serves as Conservation Scientist with The Marin Resource Conservation District and is a graduate of the Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences Department at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.



Mark Easter
Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory, Colorado State University

Mark is a Senior Research Associate at the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory (NREL) at Colorado State University. He works on greenhouse gas inventories, life cycle analyses, and decision support systems for assessing greenhouse gas emissions in land use. Mark has worked on national-level inventories of greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture and forestry in the United States, Brazil, Kenya, Jordan, India, Spain and Italy, from the county level up to the national level. He is currently the project coordinator for the COMET-Farm Project and technical lead for the Carbon Benefits Project. COMET-Farm is a web-based decision support system for assessing the greenhouse gas benefits of agricultural conservation practices. The Carbon Benefits Project is funded by the Global Environment Facility, and provides decision support systems for assessing the greenhouse gas benefits of sustainable land use projects in developing nations. Mark earned a M.S. in Botany with an emphasis in Forest Ecology at the University of Vermont in 1991.
